Sponsored by the Confederate Heritage Trust, Inc., the Confederate Ghost Walk is an annual fund raising event that provides for the care, maintenance and upkeep of the "Soldiers Ground", the Hunley plot, the annual Memorial Day observance, and maintenance and repair of monuments located at Magnolia
Cemetery in Charleston SC.
The production (some refer to it as "folk theatre") depicts a series of events (scenarios) as they may have occurred during the War for Southern Independence. The scenes are essentially living history skits, choreographed and performed by amateur players. The theme of the skit must be based on a historically accurate event related to a Confederate soldier or partisan who lies buried in Magnolia cemetery. The "actors" are all volunteers who belong to various heritage or historical organizations and come from around the State to help make the event a success.
The audience consists of tour groups of approximately sixty people. Individual groups are guided separately through the cemetery at night by escorts using only candle lanterns for illumination. The groups pause at each scenario to view the skit. Each scene is introduced by a narrator who gives a brief explanation of the historical significance of the event and what the actors will attempt to portray. The tours last approximately one hour. Warning: There are trip hazards in this old cemetery, but we make every effort to keep the tour groups on paved roads.
All tour guides, actors, or other participants are dressed in period clothing and the entire production is accomplished under the illumination of candle or oil lanterns only. This is a fun event! It's an educational tour that will transport you back in time and provides a unique experience for anyone interested in history or for those who are just curious. Featured on CNN and in several magazines, it is most appropriate for adults and older children who may understand and appreciate the significance of each scenario.
We do not advise bringing younger children to this event.
Advertising is minimal and tickets must be purchased in
advance. Word of mouth is sufficient to make the 'Ghost Walk' a sellout event
every year. It is normally scheduled for the second weekend in October. Note that the production is held rain or shine and has been cancelled only once - because of a hurricane.
